Our facilities and visits

Our facilities and visits

SKB International has access to a number of unique facilities that are connected to nuclear waste management and operated by SKB. Do you want to know more about how to manage and operate such facilities? From time to time, some of them are open for visits to clients, stakeholders and implementor organisations worldwide.

We have several facilities for research, storage and disposal of nuclear waste. A large part of the research has been carried out at our laboratories in Oskarshamn where also the Central Interim Storage for Spent Nuclear Fuel , Clab is located.

The Final Repository for Short-lived Radioactive Waste , SFR is located in Forsmark,. north of Stockholm. The initial construction of The Final Repository for Spent Nuclear Fuel is ongoing and will be put into use within the next ten years.

Transparency plays a key role

Being an implementer of a comprehensive programme for nuclear waste management as well as an owner and operator of nuclear facilities, we can occasionally offer technical visits for professionals and experts to our facilities. Transparency like this plays a very important part in increasing public knowledge and creating understanding and trust.

During these visits to our facilities, we will show existing ways to safely handle and dispose of nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel. We are very proud of the way we manage and operate our facilities.

The Final Repository for Spent Nuclear Fuel

Final Repository for Spent Nuclear Fuel
The final repository for spent fuel will be situated at Söderviken which is located within the industrial area of SKB’s facility in Forsmark. At a depth of approximately 500 meters in the 1.9 billion-year-old rock, the final repository is being constructed.

SFR

Final Repository for short-lived radioactive waste

SFR is a facility where short-lived low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste is deposited. It receives operational waste from the nuclear power plants and Clab , as well as radioactive waste from medical care, research and industry

Clab

Central Interim Storage for Spent Nuclear Fuel

Clab is a facility where the spent nuclear fuel from all the Swedish nuclear power plants is interim stored awaiting the final repository for spent fuel to be put into operation.

The Canister Laboratory

The Canister Laboratory is where we conduct research on the copper canister. We explore materials science, detail the manufacturing process and how it will be industrialised into serial production.

Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory

SKB’s research village on the island of Äspö comprises several facilities, the best-known being the underground Hard Rock Laboratory, operational since 1995. The Multipurpose Test Facility, Water and Chemistry Laboratory and the Material and Science Laboratory is also situated here.
