Central Interim Storage for Spent Nuclear Fuel – Clab

Clab is a facility where the spent nuclear fuel from all the Swedish nuclear power plants is interim stored awaiting the final repository for spent fuel to be put into operation. During the storage time, which lasts for several decades, radioactivity levels drop which makes the fuel more manageable.

Licensed and taken into operation in 1985, Clab is located near the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant and is owned and operated by SKB.

The spent fuel is stored in water filled pools placed in vaults 30 metres deep in the bedrock. The storage pools are made of concrete with stainless sheet steel linings and are designed to withstand earthquakes. The facility’s capacity is 11,000 tonnes of spent fuel
